| FAQs |
What is the rate of application per litre of compost?
In tubs, pots and containers the rate is 1g per litre of compost. In hanging baskets this should be increased to 1.75g per litre.
Why should my container be watered twice when first made up?
When SwellGel first imbibes water it takes a liitle time for the gel crystal to fully swell the hence the double water treatment.
The compost has overflowed, spilling out of the container?
This means that you have added more than the recommended quantity of SwellGel to your compost. Either remove the spillage until it is at its correct height. Better still, remove all compost, dilute with fresh compost and re-pot the container.
How long will SwellGel last?
SwellGel will continue to absorb and release for two years or more.
Is SwellGel biodegradable?
Yes, the action of sunlight and bacteria degrades the gel back to simple molecules.
How does SwellGel work?
As water is absorbed by the crystals, a lattice work structure inside expands holding the water in place. If the level of water in the compost drops then water is released from the gel into the compost. Plant roots also grow through the gel where they can take up water directly.
Does SwellGel reduce the frequency or quantity of water needed?
The addition of SwellGel does not reduce the plants water requirement, what it does do is reduce watering frequency need and reduces the wastage when watering.

There is a jelly-like substance on the soil around my plants. Is this a fungus and what do I need to do to control it?
This is probably not a fungus but the water storing crystal swelled to capacity. Certain composts include these to help with water retention. You can also add it to the soil or compost by using Phostrogen SwellGel.

I recently heard of a product for mixing into the soil to help stop my containers drying out so quickly. What is this and where do I get it from?
You may have heard about a product called Phostrogen SwellGel. This is a water-storing crystal which absorbs water when you water your plants, then releases it again as the compost dries - similar to a sponge. This lengthens the time between waterings and helps plants grow better because there is less fluctuation in the availability of moisture.

The fruits on my tomatoes keep splitting - how can I prevent this?
Splitting normally results from irregular watering. To overcome this it is advisable to water as regularly as possible, without over-watering, of course. If regularly adding more water by hand is difficult, then perhaps a drip irrigation system would help. Alternatively, incorporating SwellGel water-storing granules with the compost will help even out the water available to the plants between waterings.
